About Post-Graduation Work Permits
What is a PGWP?
A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international students to work in Canada after completing their studies. The duration depends on your program length. PGWPs are employer-specific or open permits depending on your program type.
Minimum Program Duration
Your program must be at least 8 months long to be eligible for a PGWP. This typically means at least 2 consecutive semesters of full-time study.
PGWP Duration Calculation
If your program is less than 2 years, your PGWP duration equals your program length. If your program is 2 years or longer, you get a 3-year PGWP (the maximum).
2024 Field of Study Restrictions
As of November 2024, PGWP eligibility for private institution graduates is restricted for certain fields including business management, hospitality, security, and massage therapy. Check the IRCC website for the current restricted fields list.
Application Timeline
You can apply for a PGWP while your study permit is still valid, or within 6 months of completing your program. You must receive your official degree, diploma, or certificate before applying.
